Jane, a psychiatrist, volunteers to establish Dorothy’s psychological profile. The teenager, who is accused of mistreating her baby, lives in a small, insular religious community off the Irish coast. Upon arriving, Jane discovers a fragile young girl as frightened as she is frightening. As the villagers view her with a jaundiced eye, she is confronted with a closed world ruled by strange religious practices. With her generous, open-minded and rational spirit, she is forced to face her own ghosts. A realistic thriller with fantastic touches, Dorothy takes a brilliant look into the mind of a young woman who holds too many secrets. Jenn Murray’s portrayal of the multiple-personality teenager is the true revelation of the film, as she creates a terrifying character. Carice Van Houten (seen in Paul Verhoeven’s Black Book) demonstrates once again her brilliant acting skills.
